The US$5 Reward

US$5 will be paid for the first time an error in any volume of the Handbook of Mineralogy is called to the attention of Mineral Data Publishing. This offer reflects Mineral Data Publishing’s commitment to provide the most reliable reference data available and to recognize the invaluable input of the broader community of readers. These corrections will be reflected in future versions of the Handbook for the benefit of all users of mineralogical data. Our web site at mineraldata.com will carry a listing of all such errors found and acknowledged.

Please check your sources and include them as necessary as your authority for our errors. We will be responsible only for our own errors, not those copied in from our sources, although we would like to be notified of minor errors of any nature, even down to misuse of punctuation and spaces. For example, please do not use the Dana's New Mineralogy Eighth Edition as a primary reference; rather, verify from its sources. We are primarily interested in corrections to incorrectly quoted numerical data and factual information of all types. We intend to be quite liberal in awarding credit for finding such errors.

Please note locality names, especially those from the 19th century, may have a variety of spellings. Also there have been numerous worldwide political boundary changes. In volume I we gambled ahead of time that the two Germanys would be reunified. For volume II  we ventured that the CIS would not be a viable entity. For volume III we presumed that the former Zaire would not be re-established. For volume IV we are watching the former Yugoslavia, etc. We are especially interested in changes in county names in the USA over the last 100 years that we have missed. Additional authenticated information on localities, crystal sizes, important references overlooked, etc. will also be appreciated. Latitude and longitude in decimal degrees taken on the ground by GPS are also of   interest.

A credit voucher will be issued in your name if you are the first to notify us of any acknowledged error on our part, in the amount of US$5 for each such error brought to our attention. This credit voucher will be honored by Mineral Data Publishing or any of our stocking dealers towards the purchase of any present or future Handbook volume.

Mineral Data Publishing will be the sole judge of validity of errors and awards. Only individuals may participate; ineligible are compensated reviewers and stocking dealers, their relatives and employees.
